FDA has been receiving inquiries about the July 27-28 meeting of the agency's Nonprescription Drugs Advisory Committee, which reviewed applications to grant nonprescription status to Tagamet (cimetidine), used to treat episodic heartburn, and Rogaine (minoxidil 2 percent topical solution), used to treat baldness in men and women.  The following may be used to answer questions.

For its consideration of the Tagamet application, the committee met jointly with FDA's Gastrointestinal Drugs Advisory
Committee.  The committees today recommended that the drug not be made available without a prescription based on potential interactions with other prescribed drugs.  Tagamet is marketed by SmithKline Beecham of Philadelphia, Pa., and was approved by FDA as a prescription drug in 1983.

The application for over-the-counter status of Tagamet was previously reviewed by the Nonprescription Drugs Advisory Committee in September 1993.  At that time the committee felt insufficient data were available to support a recommendation for the switch from prescription status.
